It’s been a year this week since I got the NB. In that time I’ve put 16723 miles on it and done the following mods:
Racing Beat 1.25" sway bar w/ brace blocks and poly bushings
OEM Mazdaspeed Miata springs
Koni Yellow adjustible sport shocks
Hardtop
Pioneer double DIN head unit
Voodoo shift knob w/ custom shift boot
Custom quilted headliner
Flowmaster 60 Delta series muffler
Aluminum-tanked radiator
Kensun HIDs
SuperBrightLEDs switchback turn signals
Yellow fog lights
GV front lip rep
Driver’s seat foamectomy (still need to do the passenger seat)
RE71r tires
I think that about covers it.
When I got it:
Now:
Unfortunately my leather steering wheel has taken a beating in that time.
Yikes. There’s an ‘02SE wheel in really good condition on eBay for $130 but unfortunately that isn’t $130 I have to spare at the moment. My other thought is to buy an all-black one (from a Protege or non-SE miata) since they’re more common and dye it brown, or get the holy grail, the wood OEM NB Nardi wheel:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
UNF. I wish I had the funds because that wheel makes my heart hurt.

How bad are the RE71Rs as daily drivers?

In one year you’ve driven further than I have in three.

Loud and stiffer than you’re used to but not awful. Very livable and I’m impressed that they’re wearing as slowly as they are with as many autocrosses as I’ve been to and as much highway driving as I’ve done on them.

I wonder how they would do for me as someone who drives 6-8k miles a year and will be doing 5-8 autocrosses a year starting next year. My current tires are great for driving around town but leave a lot to be desired when you start pushing them.

16k is about two years worth of driving in the M3, or about 7-8 months in the 3.

It’s an island. There’s only so far you can drive.

Ditch the airbag so you can get some of the real pretty wheels out there, plus weight savings!

I mean, everyone lives on an island. Really big ones.

I have a friend with an NA with them, and he doesn’t believe they will die.

Do it. They’re silly cheap in Miata sizes anyways.

I’m debating between buying a set in a 205 R16 to replace my current rubber or going up to a wider 17 inch wheel. The smaller sidewall would be nice.

Nah, not on my daily/road trip car. It’s staying OEM with airbag.

That front lip made a fantastic difference. All these miata posts make me want to pick up a cheap miata to beat on /autocross/cruise on the weekends.
